What is Aletheia House?

Aletheia House is an adobe casita situated on two high desert acres in a small New Mexico village at the northern foot of the Sandia Mountain Wilderness.  It is walking distance from some of Cibola National Forest’s many beautiful hiking trails.

The property cannot be strictly described as an artist residency or retreat.  With the tagline “Arts and Letters for Contemplative Life,” Aletheia House is an experiment conceived by the two of us, artists Æmen Ededéen and Maja Ruznic.

We invite artists and writers for periods ranging from three weeks to three months to live, work, think, tinker, sketch, jot, reflect, rejuvenate, find solitude, and in every way enjoy an escape from life’s usual routines.  Each session takes the needs of the individual artist or writer into account without any particular agenda, results, or goals in mind on our part.  We welcome their partners and children. What Aletheia House becomes in time will depend almost entirely on those who come to stay.

How Did The Project Originate?

Although neither of us has any specific agenda — politically, socially, spiritually, etc. — the idea for Aletheia House has emerged from years of reflection and private conversations between the two of us and among our friends and colleagues.  Having reason to believe that the shape and tone of the art world and the broader culture doesn’t reflect what matters most to the individual artists and creative people who make it all possible, we’ve longed for a day when we might have something to offer of our own that could contribute one very small piece of a much larger need.  The need, in our view, is to reprioritize the humanity of the individual above and beyond any social or political frameworks that tend to limit or exclude the depth and quality of one’s  experiences and contributions.  In committing to such a direction, we’ve come to feel that it helps to slow down, move for a time outside of the main cultural hubs, and rest in an environment which encourages stepping back from the usual types of social and pofessional pressures and expectations.

At the time of writing, we are resting against a boulder among the ponderosas of the higher reaches of the nearby Sandia Mountains.  Birdcall is in the air and the sun is rising over the crest behind us.  It has been a years-long process of prioritizing greater individual freedom and independence as well as deepening attentiveness to our immediate reality.  The idea of Aletheia House came to us at a time when it became unfulfilling to tie our sense of identity to the cultural landscape surrounding our careers.  We hope, over time, to play a part in fostering a community which more greatly values inner experience, free thinking, and contemplative life.

How Is Aletheia House Funded?

Aletheia House is neither a non-profit with boards or committees nor a profit-driven business.  At the present time, it is funded only by our personal income.  It will continue this way until it’s no longer feasible or necessary.

What Does Aletheia House Seek To Achieve?

Those we invite will often hold different views or understandings of the world than, perhaps, even we ourselves do.  We consider such diversity of thought and experience to be a gift and a privilege toward shaping our own longterm lifework.  We believe community thrives best, not around a common belief or ideological framework, but around a common commitment to deep searching and a sincere desire to better understand the work we all do, the lives we live, and the world we share.

Although this might sound ambitious, in the day-to-day reality of things, it will, hopefully, feel  quite simple and free for those who stay at Aletheia House.  In the most basic sense, there is really nothing much to accomplish.  Aletheia House need not be so serious a matter.  What value might a semi-isolated New Mexico casita on two acres hold for an individual artist or writer?  It is hardly for us to know.  Like anyone, we’ll wait and see.  Aletheia House will change and evolve as we learn over time.

Is There A Submission Process?

At this time there isn’t.  As parents and full-time artists, we already struggle to keep up with  correspondence in general.  We do encourange anyone who wants to contact Aletheia House to feel free.  Please know that messages will be seen first by Samuel Staffan, our Digital Manager.

For now, Aletheia House is invite only.  This could eventually change.  If you would still like us to know about the work you do, we will try our best look at what comes into the inbox.  Please do not send anything with the expectation of an immediate response.  As mentioned, Aletheia House is not a true artist residency.  It cannot boost careers or improve overall professional standing for an artist or writer.  We highly recommend applying to more established and prestigious residencies, to that end.
